Kobbie and I started heading up to Glendo as soon as we got off of work on Thursday. With all of the holiday traffic it was close to 7:00pm by the time we left Denver city limits. It took us about 3 hours to get up to Glendo Resevior. The others had arrived earlier in the day and had informed us of their location. However when we arrived it was pitch black and swarming with people. Finding our friends was not going to be as easy as we thought. However we eventually found them and setup camp at about 11:30pm. We then proceeded to walk the beach and check out the scene.
The next morning
The next morning we woke up and had some breakfast and talked about what we were going to do with our day. We setup a tarp between two cars for shade and decided that the best thing to do to fully wake up would be to go do some cliff diving across the lake.
Cliff Diving
The cliffs that we went to had no place to dock our boat, so Mark stayed in the boat and piloted it while the rest of us headed up and jumped. I liked the cliffs in Guernsey a bit better since they were much higher, but these weren't too bad. They were about 20 feet high and we were able to pull some tricks if we wanted to off of them.
Cruising the Lake
After diving we were all refreshed and ready for the rest of our day. We proceeded to take the boat out and cruise around the lake, investigating the different coves for possible wake boarding opportunities later.
High Speed Bailout
We had some fun near our beach driving the boat at fast speeds while Lyle and others jumped out into the water. Originally we had a plan to confuse onlookers by having the driver of the boat hide on the ground while everyone else dove off the boat making it look as if the crew had abandonned the ship, but there were too many swimmers and jet skiers to make the plan materialize.
Tubing
Later that day we all headed out to do a little tubing. This was more fun behind the boat than behind a jet ski because of the boats ability to really whip you around. Before at Guernsey, when I had been towed behind a jetski, it would take a long time to throw me from the tube. On the boat it took much less time and the wrecks were much more spectacular. Not only would we catch larger amounts of air off the wakes, but it would hurt a lot more too. Doug, Gerry, Micah and I all sustained minor injuries from our falls off the tube.
Returning to Camp
After tubing we came back to the beach. We all walked up and down the beach several times looking to meet new people and attract a crowd for a party we would be hosting later that evening. Steve is shown meeting Morgan in this picture. Morgan and her sister Julie would join us later in the afternoon for some boating and then for the party. They each owned a four-wheeler which handled exceptionally well in the sand. I borrowed Julie's later in the evening and it was a lot of fun to cruise around in it at high speeds and try to catch air off some of the steeper dunes.
Back out in the Boat
We headed out one more time that evening to have a couple of drinks and jump off the cliffs one more time before returning to the campsite for dinner. We cooked up some hot dogs and sat around camp for the remainder of the day.
Sunset Beach Walk
After looking for us for some time, Eric and Carie found us close to when the sun was about to go down. Everyone was introduced and we headed out to the beach for a walk at sunset. It was a very pretty sunset and I took a bunch of pictures of it. We headed back to camp just as people were getting ready to start a large 4th of July bonfire and start the party.
Fourth of July Party
We had a lot of fun at the party. The park rangers were very leniant with us since there was supposed to be a 10:00pm curfue. One of the biggest highlights was when the music on the stereo suddenly turned to the Magnum P.I. Theme song and Lyle sprinted around the campsite dressed as Tom Selek. The party probably capped off at 50-60 people and went until about 5:00am.
The Next Morning
The next morning it was not easy to get up. I had drank mass amounts of tequilla, bacardi and beer and was not feeling 100 percent. Everyone slowly staggered out of bed as we cooked breakfast. The neighboring campsite was completely trashed. It was littered with beer cans and had smashed tables and chairs. It looked like a trailer park. Ours had somehow managed to escape the wrath of the party goers.
Taking the boat out
Mark, Kobbie, Carie and I started our day off by taking the boat out for a little cliff diving. We then returned to camp for a while. Then, Steve, Morgan, Doug, Lyle, Micah, Mark, Eric and I took the boat out for a little cruise to the other end of the lake. We found a little inlet with a bunch of small cliffs to jump off of and a couple larger ones.
Even More Cliff Diving
We spent about an hour hanging out in the cove, diving off the cliffs, jumping off the boat and checking out the scenery before heading back to camp.
An afternoon of relaxing
Every vacation needs a break, so we spent the remainder of the afternoon relaxing on the beach and at camp. We walked up and down the beach a few times, and while many people were staying, the scene seemed to be winding down a bit from the previous two days. We didn't anticipate being able to throw a party again that night, so we planned on having a combination of events going on at our campsite, while exploring other venues as well.
Sunset Grab-Ass
The boys all took a walk on the beach at sunset. Again, I took a ton of pictures. The sunsets were very beautiful at Glendo.
Night Time Party Scene
Steve and I walked the beach several times that night, but not much was going on. We would catch the occasional rumor of a party up the beach and go, only to discover it had been broken up. We grabbed a few people from various camps and headed back to ours to host a party there. It lasted for a while but in the late hours of the night it too was broken up by the rangers who were neither leniant that evening, nor polite. Steve was fined for having his car stereo on at unacceptable volumes, the fire was put out, and everyone was sent on their way.
The Next Morning
The next morning was hard to get up for as well, but we all managed to stagger out of bed and make breakfast. We went cliff diving one more time and then headed back to camp, packed up, and left for the day. We had a great time and can't wait to return again in a year. Although the sherrif told us to tell our friends back in Denver that Glendo was no longer a party place, we have no doubt that it is still alive and well.
